How to Calculate Atlas Air Freight Chargeable Weight
Air cargo is constrained by both aircraft weight and available
cargo volume. A large lightweight shipment can occupy more
aircraft space than a compact shipment with the same physical
weight. Chargeable weight therefore compares gross weight with
volumetric weight.
General Air-Freight Formula
A widely used general air-freight relationship divides external
package volume in cubic centimetres by 6,000. This is equivalent
to approximately 166.67 volumetric kilograms per cubic metre.

Some express or contracted movements use a different divisor,
such as 5,000 cm³/kg. The custom setting allows the quotation’s
divisor or kilograms-per-CBM factor to be entered directly.
Gross Weight
Gross weight includes the goods and all transport packaging.
Include pallets, skids, crates, cartons, wrapping, cushioning,
straps, and protective materials.
Package Entry and Total-CBM Entry
Package mode calculates CBM from dimensions and quantity. Summary
mode is useful when a warehouse, forwarder, or packing list
already provides the total CBM and total gross weight.
Atlas Size-Reference Alerts
The calculator checks package-mode entries against the published
125 × 96 × 118 inch reference envelope and a 6,800-kilogram
single-piece reference. A warning does not mean that cargo is
rejected. It indicates that advance arrangements and operational
review may be necessary.

Why the Final Result May Differ
Final chargeable weight and acceptance can depend on verified
dimensions, verified gross weight, aircraft and ULD configuration,
contour, floor-loading limits, tie-down requirements, commodity,
dangerous-goods rules, route, service, and contractual pricing.

Which dimensional divisor should be used?
Use the divisor stated in the applicable quotation, contract,
or tariff. The default general-air-freight preset uses
6,000 cm³/kg.
What happens when gross weight is higher?
Gross weight controls the estimate when it exceeds the
calculated volumetric weight.
Does a size alert mean Atlas Air will reject the cargo?
No. It means the entered piece is beyond a published reference
and should be reviewed with Atlas Air or the freight forwarder.
