How to Calculate Dimensional Weight for Air Freight
Air freight carriers must consider both the physical weight of a
shipment and the amount of aircraft space it occupies. A compact
carton containing metal components may be heavy while taking up very
little room. A much larger carton containing cushions, plastic goods,
or empty containers may weigh less but occupy a significant section of
an aircraft cargo hold. Dimensional weight provides a consistent way
to account for the space used by low-density freight.
Dimensional weight is also known as volumetric weight, volume weight,
or cube weight. It converts the external volume of a shipment into an
equivalent shipping weight. The carrier normally compares the
calculated dimensional weight with the shipment’s actual gross
weight. The greater value is generally used as the chargeable weight,
although the final method can depend on the airline, freight
forwarder, express carrier, service level, trade lane, and customer
agreement.
Air Freight Dimensional Weight Formula
When dimensions are entered in centimetres and the divisor is 6,000,
the result is expressed in kilograms. When dimensions are entered in
inches and an imperial divisor such as 139 or 166 is used, the result
is expressed in pounds. The divisor and measurement system must
always match. Mixing centimetres with an imperial divisor or inches
with a metric divisor will produce an inaccurate result.
A divisor of 6,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram is commonly used as
a general air-freight calculation factor. Some express carriers and
courier services use 5,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram. Imperial
freight and parcel services may use 139 or 166 cubic inches per pound.
A carrier may also use a custom contractual divisor. The correct
factor is the one stated in the applicable quotation, tariff, or
service agreement.
Actual Weight, Dimensional Weight, and Chargeable Weight
Actual weight is the gross scale weight of the completed shipment. It
includes the goods, cartons, pallets, skids, wrapping, straps,
cushioning, protective corners, and any other packaging material.
Dimensional weight is calculated from the shipment’s outside
measurements. Chargeable weight is the figure used as the starting
point for freight pricing and is normally the higher of actual and
dimensional weight.
Consider two identical cartons measuring 120 centimetres long,
80 centimetres wide, and 50 centimetres high. Each carton weighs
55 kilograms. Using a divisor of 6,000, the dimensional weight is
calculated as 120 × 80 × 50 × 2 ÷ 6,000. The result is 160 kilograms.
The total actual weight is 110 kilograms. Since the dimensional
weight is higher, the estimated chargeable weight is 160 kilograms
before carrier-specific rounding or minimum charges are applied.
How to Measure Air Freight Correctly
Measure the outside of the fully packed shipment rather than the
internal dimensions of an empty carton. Include the pallet or skid,
wrapping, straps, handles, wheels, protective materials, carton
bulges, overhang, and any protruding component. Measure the longest
points because carriers may use automated dimensioning equipment and
may replace shipper-supplied measurements when their own measurements
are different.
For irregular cargo, use the dimensions of the smallest rectangular
box that could completely contain the item. Cylinders, machinery,
reels, tubes, sculptures, and unpacked objects may occupy more usable
cargo space than their geometric volume suggests. Non-stackable,
oversized, fragile, temperature-controlled, or hazardous freight can
also be subject to special handling and pricing rules.

Why the Dimensional Divisor Matters
A smaller dimensional divisor produces a higher dimensional weight.
For example, a carton measuring 60 × 50 × 40 centimetres has a volume
of 120,000 cubic centimetres. Dividing that volume by 6,000 produces a
dimensional weight of 20 kilograms. Dividing the same volume by 5,000
produces a dimensional weight of 24 kilograms.
Both calculations can be valid when they represent different carrier
rules. Never choose a divisor simply because it produces the lowest
chargeable weight. Use the factor connected to the service being
booked. Contracted rates, express products, consolidation services,
domestic flights, international routes, and parcel services may use
different dimensional factors.
Shipment-Level and Package-Level Calculations
Some carriers compare the total actual weight of the complete
shipment with its total dimensional weight. Other carriers calculate
the actual and dimensional weight of each package or handling unit,
choose the higher value for each one, and then add those chargeable
values together. These methods can produce different results when a
shipment contains a mixture of dense and lightweight packages.
The calculator includes both methods under the advanced options. The
shipment-total method is selected by default because it is simpler,
but the applicable quotation or tariff should determine which method
is used for a final estimate.
Reducing Dimensional Weight
Shippers may be able to reduce volumetric weight by selecting cartons
that fit the goods more closely, removing unnecessary empty space,
reducing excessive void fill, using a lower-profile pallet, nesting
compatible products, changing the packing orientation, or safely
disassembling products. Compressible goods may sometimes be packed
into a smaller volume when compression will not damage them.
Packaging should not be reduced when the change increases the risk of
breakage, moisture damage, crushing, contamination, theft, or handling
problems. The most economical package is not always the smallest
possible package. It is the package that protects the product while
avoiding unnecessary volume, material, and handling difficulty.
Why the Final Carrier Invoice May Be Different
This calculator estimates dimensional and chargeable weight, but it
does not reproduce every possible carrier pricing rule. A final
invoice may include a minimum freight charge, fuel surcharge,
security fee, screening fee, documentation, terminal handling,
customs clearance, collection, delivery, storage, insurance,
dangerous-goods handling, duties, or taxes.
A carrier may also round each package dimension, round each package
weight, calculate handling units separately, apply a minimum
chargeable weight, or remeasure the shipment. Always check the
applicable quotation, tariff, and final carrier measurements when an
exact billing estimate is required.
Using the Print and Excel Reports

What divisor should I use?
Use the divisor shown in the carrier’s quotation. A factor of

Should I include the pallet?
Yes. Include the pallet in both the dimensions and the total gross

Is dimensional weight always charged?
